Research Project Description:
Students interested in conducting research on a topic of their choice related to medical ethics and law should reach out. We will discuss potential areas of interest and develop a plan for a project. Projects can involve a variety of research methods; I especially encourage students to consider research such as policy papers. Examples of topics could include ethical/legal issues in genetics, reproductive health, physician-assisted suicide, health care in the criminal justice system, geriatric care, health insurance, etc. Projects from prior years have included topics such as a discussion of the confidentiality of genetic information discovered post-mortem; a study of physician-assisted suicide laws, comparing and contrasting the language used and the ethical implications; and ethical pain management in women’s health; among others.

Research Project Description:
I have three ongoing projects of potential interest to medical students.
Project 1: The potential usefulness of a Generative AI Algorithm incorporating patient’s values in a decision-making matrix to assist a Proxy decision-maker with complex end-of-life medical decisions for an incapacitated patient. This project is in the development phase and involves surveys, development of AI Algorithms and proxy decision-making clinical situations.
Project 2: Analysis of Clinical Ethics Consultation Service activities, evaluation, characterization of consults, etc. Student would be involved developing evaluative surveys and semi-structured interviews, analysis of consultation activities, etc.
Project 3: Using Data-centric AI to Identify from EHR large data sets high probability Indications for Appropriate Implementation of Advanced Directives (AD) in the Clinical Care of Critically Ill Patients. Students would be involved in identifying key terms and phrases in the electronic medical record and development of project development plan including analysis of findings.
Specific student research projects will be developed under any of these large projects which match the student’s interests. Publication of findings would be encouraged..
